Resistance is often thought of as a reason to change course or to abandon a project entirely. Far too often, I see too many people give up at the first sign of resistance. If you’re hitting some resistance now, let me offer a couple of encouraging words to keep you on the path.
1. New Successes = New Problems
More success, more problems. It feels simple, but it’s a point that’s easy to lose sight of. One of the most common reasons you’ll come across a roadblock is you’ve recently experienced success. Though it sounds counterintuitive, experiencing a new level of success is almost immediately followed by a new set of problems. Once you think about it, it makes sense; if you’ve moved onto a new level in your career, it’s going to come with new challenges you haven’t faced before. Though it may take time to adjustment, it’s certainly no reason to give up.
2. Treat Difficulty as a Learning Opportunity
Sometimes it isn’t the problem itself, but how it’s framed. If you’re only thinking of a problem as a nuisance or something you’re stuck dealing with, consider changing your mindframe a bit and see it as an opportunity to learn. Think of yourself as a problem detective, following it all the way back to the root. Where did it come from? What’s the most basic cause of it? How do you prevent it from happening again? If you reframe a financial problem you’re facing and learn from it, you’ll save yourself the headache of having to solve it later on; plus, you’ll have a better attitude going into it.
3. Resistance Will Make You Stronger
Think about runners or bikers who do resistance training. They’ll run with ankle weights, turn up the resistance level on their stationary bike, or take on hills. They put themselves through hard workouts to make big race feel easy, or to build their muscles. The same thing could be said of your financial journey. There are definitely times when you’ll be asked to go through a tough period in your business, but it’ll also make you a stronger, more apt business person. Even though it seems tough, don’t give up.
