Whoever lives long enough encounters stress at some point. How we manage our stress levels, no matter who we are, can have a big impact on our lives. Stress is invisible, but it sure can be heavy!
Since you can’t see your stress, it’ hard to know when you’re over-extending yourself. Sometimes, you have to look at other areas for clues as to whether your direction and method is sustainable for you.
Welcome to Topic Tuesday, where we discuss something specifically related to health, fitness, business, or life, in general.
Today, we’re going to think about how we get in our own way sometimes, and how to get around it. Let’s get into it!
Dealing With Stress
If you’re put under a great deal of pressure all at once, you’ll notice. An abrupt change from comfortable to very uncomfortable is pretty hard to miss for most people. Although it could be a change you can cope with, it’s probably not going to be as easy to do.
Intense stress all at once tends to trigger the person to react to alleviate it. It could be something as simple as stepping back from an obviously bad decision that seemed ok before. If you could easily resolve something that’s making you really uncomfortable all of a sudden, chances are you’ll take care of it pretty quickly.
Most of the millions of people that struggle with pressures everyday got where they are by dealing with a different kind of stress.
Long Term Effects Of Stress
The more obligations and responsibilities you have to manage, the more likely it is that you’ll have to correct something at some point. As you begin to transform your life into one that you’ve envisioned for yourself, you’ll take on more responsibilities. If you’re not careful, these new things can become consistent sources of stress.
Over the course of years, not managing your stress can cause all kinds of problems.
Insominia
Everyone has trouble sleeping every once in a while. Seasons change, biology changes, and so do obligations and responsisiblities. If you travel at all, you know how difficult it can be to get good rest away from home, even if you aren’t stressed out about anything.
But chronic stress can make it almost impossible for the body to slow down enough to rest consistently. If you can’t mentally detach yourself from the things you have to do, you might develop habits that prevent you from sleeping.
The problem then gets worse the next day; stress levels are higher in sleep deprived people. Everything is harder when you’re exhausted, requiring more focus, and causing you even more stress.
Procrastination
When you’re care-free and motivated, tasks get done quickly. It’s easy to focus on what needs to be done and stay motivated throughout whatever process is needed. But if you’re stressed out about a million different things, chances are you’ll have a more difficult time concentrating on solving a specific problem.
The memory of this frustration, if imprinted deeply enough, can actually dissuade you from putting forth effort when appropriate. The worst part about it is that eventually, you might lose the correlation with the memory.
At that point, you’ve forgotten why you’re procrastinating; it’s just become a comfortable habit.
Depression
Depression affects more than 18 million adults in any given year. Having unmanageable stress in your life long term can create the background of helplessness and lethargy that so many patients suffer through.
The hormone levels in your body are a totally different mix when you’re stressed as opposed to when you’re at ease and comfortable. Over a long enough time, stress can snowball into full blown depression.
Physical Pain
Are you having headaches, bodyaches, or soreness due to too much tension and stress? Is your sleep affected by the pressures you face during the day? It might be long past time to get your stress under control.
