More often than not you’ll come upon obstacles in life. It’s rare that things all turn out the way you imagined when you started a journey. Depending on how determined you are to achieve your original goal, you may decide it makes sense to change your objective, or try to get past the obstacle. And depending on how disruptive that obstacle is, you may find yourself more inclined to abandon some objectives altogether.
If it wasn’t all that important of a goal in the first place, it’s an easy call to let things go. But if there’s a major obstacle preventing you from realizing something critical and important, you might have a serious dilemma on your hands.
So, as a small business owner, how do you know it it’s worth it to use everything at your disposal to get past the obstacle?
Welcome to Topic Thursday, where we discuss a specific topic related to business, finance, or life in general. Today we’re going to explore how to stay motivated, even in the face of the seemingly impossible.
Why Some People Make Hard Things Look Easy
It’s been said that nothing worthwhile is easy to accomplish. To an extent, this is very true; if major accomplishments become easy, everyone could easily accomplish them. Things that seem like fantastic feats would eventually lose their luster. It’d be difficult to even see the value in the achievement at all, at some point. If everyone could dunk a basketball, no one would care who could dunk a basketball!
The most talented among us in a given field are capable of feats that might be completely impossible for the rest of us; all while making it look easy. When a person does something extremely difficult, but it’s simple for them, it naturally creates a sense of mastery and wonder around the performer. Watching a master painter at work betrays the years of practice and failure that must have come prior.
Things look a little different to someone without a certain baseline level of understanding. To a person with no idea what it must have taken to reach a certain level of proficiency at something difficult, it becomes magical. But no matter how talented they are after years of refinement, no one is born a master of any craft. People are all gifted with certain talents, and developing them in specific directions can create mastery.
But even the masters had to struggle at some point to overcome obstacles. Difficulties are actually there for everyone at some point. When you come upon something preventing you from reaching a goal, remember that you’re not the only one working toward something worthwhile; you just might be the only one you see struggling at any given time.
The Value Of Goals In Life
A goal worth achieving is a goal worth a certain amount of hard work. Sometimes, it’s even worth genuine struggle every now and then. It’s up to you how important your goals are. It might be something trivial, only worth a minor inconvenience, or it could be something of tantamount importance, which would require years of effort and dedication. Most of the important things in life take time and focus.
A worthy cause is likely to have bigger obstacles than the path toward a minor victory. Sometimes, a goal can be almost entirely obscured by the obstacles on the way. If it’s important to you, you’ll put forth the effort and time to find a way past. If it’s not possible to do so on your own, you might delegate some portion to a friend, family member, or service. Sometimes, reliance on a community can make all the difference in a seemingly impossible situation.
But even an entire community of like-minded individuals is bound to come upon something that they just can’t deal with easily. So what do you do if you’ve exhausted all of your resources, and you still haven’t touched the object of your purpose? How do you keep going?
The Most Important Thing To Remember
When confronted with an impenetrable wall of circumstance, there’s still an option. You can change your course to navigate around the wall, or you can change yourself, so that the wall and original objective aren’t the focus of your efforts anymore. If you’ve gone as far as you can go, and there’s no getting any further, it’s worth exploring your original objective; was this something absolutely required of you? Or was it something that you really had a deep desire to accomplish, but isn’t necessarily the key to your overall happiness?
The impossible is rarely required, but the human imagination is just about limitless. Examine your why when confronted with unscalable obstacles in life. Enlist your community to help share their perspectives and resources when applicable. And above all, keep an open mind to recognize the blessings of G-d when they are inevitably revealed to you. Even in the thickest struggles, G-d is with us all; now, before, and forever.
