When you’re bettering yourself at something, the most important thing you can do is to understand your starting point. You need to take stock of what you’ve already achieved, what your long term goals are, and whether an added detour might compromise those goals. There’s always room for self-improvement, but there’s not always time for an overhaul of anything complex.
Welcome to Topic Thursdays, when we focus on a specific topic related to business, finance, or life in general. This week, we’re discussing how to recognize when you need to focus on a major life transformation.
To reach fulfillment and success in life, it’s first important to start from a solid foundation of intent. Planting your feet squarely on the knowledge of who you are and where you stand will give you the best possible beginning in everything you do. But first, you have to know when it’s time to do something different.
So how do you determine when it’s time to make a major pivot? A good indicator is how you feel about any aspect of your life. These 4 signs should tell you it’s time to make a change.
You Burn Out
You’re motivated at the start, and you can take on the world with a smile…at first. The tasks that you complete seem Herculean to some, but you make it look easy. And for you, it is easy; you don’t mind a little hard work.
But no matter how hard you’re willing to try at something, you’re eventually going to come upon an obstacle that you just can’t get past with effort alone. When that happens, you need something to believe in. When it seems like you can’t make it another step, you’ll need something that will give you the strength to carry on.
But it’s not going to come out of nowhere, just because you’ve reached your limit.
You’re Doing Too Much
Personal achievements are gratifying. There’s nothing more satisfying in life than accomplishing a difficult goal. No matter who you are, as a person on the planet Earth, you’re not alone in anything you do. Everything you experience is connected to the experience of everyone else here.
And out of all the people, your family shares the deepest connection with you by orders of magnitude – especially over people that you don’t know. We’re all people, and all deserve love, dignity and respect, but our families deserve more of it from us.
You’re Paralyzed
Visualization is important. It can help you see where you want to go, and what you want to do, before you go about doing it. But being able to understand the path is only a portion of getting there. You also need to be physically capable of doing the work to get there. You have to be able to carry out your dreams. It doesn’t do you much good to have the perfect plan that you can’t execute.
You don’t want to be so paralyzed or exhausted from your routine that you can’t pursue your goals. If you’re motivated but there’s a deficit in your energy levels, you need to either find more energy, or conserve what you already have. Don’t just drink coffee! You can become stronger through exercise and actually become better physically equipped to deal with the challenges of your life.
Your Finances Are Out Of Whack
Whatever it is that you’re trying to do, you need to have the right state of mind. Money management is no different. Without a wealth mindset, you won’t be able to understand the best ways to nurture and build your wealth, you’ll struggle with investments, and you’ll be limited in doing the things you want to do. You might need to get more income, or minimize your overhead.
No matter your goal, you’ll need to keep your financial obligations around it manageable and comfortable. It’s up to you how you want to invest, but it’s important to ensure that you don’t overextend to the point that you’re suffering in some other aspect because of it.
