I’ve had some time to reflect on some of my own challenges. All of us experience periods of heartache and strife throughout our lives. I know I have, and I’m betting you have too. What you’ve been through is a big part of your experience, but it doesn’t define who you are. No matter what lies in your past, you have the power to make changes in your life for the better – and worse.
Do you feel like you’re doing the same thing and not getting the results you want? Here are 3 ways you can make a change in your life:
Identify the Problem
Take a look at your habits and commitments. I talk a lot about working hard and saving your money, making wise investments and being prepared for a future of financial freedom. It’s one thing to have a good plan; it’s another to be confronted with something expensive and have to pass it up for something a little less irresponsible.
While it’s usually a fairly simple matter to identify and eliminate unnecessary expenses, it can be more difficult to foresee something like an emergency. I can speak to this directly as a physical therapist. People get into car accidents all the time, for instance, and from my experience working with patients, I can tell you that often the recovery period is painful and expensive. While it’s true that someone is at fault for every traffic accident, most people don’t proactively plan to actually hurt anyone on the road. That’s why they’re called “accidents.”
Find an alternative
You’re always in control, even when it doesn’t seem like you are. Even the financial effects of traffic accidents can be mitigated to an extent. A good insurance policy is a critical rung in the ladder to financial freedom. Accidents happen, but insurance is an investment in yourself because it shields you from financial liability that could otherwise be very expensive. Regardless of your situation, there’s always a better way and a worse way to invest.
If you’re spending too much on something, try and find ways to do the same things with less. For you, this could mean taking less time to do something by investing in a better process. Or, it could mean that you buy the less expensive alternative than the one you’ve grown accustomed to. Here’s an example; if you like coffee, learn to make your own. Depending on your drinking habits, making your own coffee can save you hundreds – even thousands – of dollars every year.
If you’re not making enough, try to make more. If you’re a serial entrepreneur, working harder to find more clients is a great way to boost your income. If you’re a full-time employee, try to put in that extra work and learn new skills to make yourself more marketable. You may not be able to flip a switch and make things perfect immediately, but you can always plan to make your future better. A wealth mindset can allow you to see avenues that other ways of thinking might hide from you.
Stick To The Plan
You’ve already been flexible enough to take a step back and look at your situation. Now, it’s time to trust in yourself and push through the uncertainty. Every time there’s a change, there’s going to be a little discomfort. That’s okay; a change is what we’re shooting for. When you’re feeling uncertain and you want to give up, remember why you started and keep moving forward. You’ll thank yourself in the end!
Even if you tried something new, and it didn’t work out immediately the way you wanted it to, keep going. You might be at a bump in the road, but there’s sure to be smooth sailing eventually. Don’t be shy about changing direction if what you’re doing obviously isn’t working, but you can’t be afraid to try a little harder, either. Keep track of what your main objectives are, and don’t let yourself be distracted; eventually, you’re going to create the situation you set out to build for yourself.
