Shifting Your Mindset

It’s been said that nothing changes until your mindset does. But shifting your mindset is much harder than it sounds, especially if you’ve attempted it before. It can feel easy to fall back into old habits, or nearly impossible to push against your impulses.

But there is hope.

But before I give you a couple of tips, let’s break down why it’s so hard in the first place. Your mindset is made up of years and years of a learned worldview. This worldview could be one that kept you safe in an unstable family environment, or that you inherited from parents or your educational system. So, recognize early on that rewiring can take a lot of work. That being said, here are 4 tips to help move your mindset into a positive place:

1. Find a Mentor
If you’ve read through any of my other articles, you’ll know that I’m a huge proponent of finding a mentor who will guide and support you. Putting yourself around someone whose mindset and motivation you admire is a great way to help build that foundation and will give you someone to emulate. A great mentor also knows how to combat the rough spots and maintain their mindset, despite the circumstances.

2. Spend One Day a Week Doing Something You Love
A big chunk of keeping your mindset in a positive place is doing something that lifts your spirits. Maybe it’s a workout that you love, or a hobby like photography or baking. And making sure that you set aside one day a week to do it won’t feel overwhelming. It’ll also give you something to look forward to and keep your mind on throughout the week as well.

3. Write Down Your Daily and Monthly Goals
Writing down your daily goals can keep your mind focused on them throughout the day and having monthly goals will make you check in on regular progress. Make sure to space your goals out realistically and evenly, though. For example, if you want to set aside $1,000 by the end of the month, divide that into weeks instead of trying to put all the money aside at once. And hitting those goals will give you the boost of positive energy you need to keep going.

4. Absorb Material That Encourages You
You never stop learning; you just continually decide what to learn. You make the choice to watch a mind-numbing show or to read something engaging. And hey, I get it, we all need time to relax, but constantly leaning on those habits for a boost can result in burnout or boredom. So, from books to podcasts to seminars, taking in material that keeps you uplifted and inspired is an easy way to keep good thoughts and strategies bouncing around your mind. And if you’re looking for a podcast to listen to, why not listen to mine?
