Networking is NOT a Dirty Word

When you think of networking, what do you see? Probably something like a bunch of people in suits, trying to be as slick as possible, right? There’s something inherently grimy about it, like you’re trying to sell yourself in some underhanded way.

I’m here to tell you that despite any preconceived notions you might have, networking is not a dirty word, and you’ve gotta leave that way of thinking behind if you’re ever going to become a great entrepreneur. It’s not easy, but once you learn to network effectively, your business will take off.

Here a few tips to help get over the fear of networking:

1. Remember that Networking is a Tool to Help You

Networking is simply building and maintaining mutually beneficial long-term relationships with others. Building your connections can give you excellent opportunities to exchange information, get advice, and achieve your career goals.

2. You’re Just Making Friends

It’s true – at the end of the day, the people you’re networking with are likely in your same business pool and are passionate about the same things you are! Instead of coming on strong and immediately selling yourself, try to find that common ground or thing that you both spark to. This will make the conversation flow more naturally and ensure a connection that will last past that initial meeting.

3. Dress to Impress (Yourself)

Before heading to your event, dress in a way that makes you feel confident. Even if your network meeting is on Zoom, do a little extra work to make yourself feel ready – wear a pair of shoes you like, or a piece of jewelry. If you’re in-person, it could make for a great conversation starter, and if you’re remote, you’ll feel that extra boost from your item, even if no one else sees it!

4. Don’t Over-Rehearse

Though having your project pitch down can be helpful, being too scripted can make you come off as robotic. Instead of having a full paragraph ready to tell people, pull the main pros of your project and have them ready to weave into the conversation. If you’d like to go even broader, make sure you can answer both of these questions:

  • What do you do?
  • Why is it important?

5. Quality over Quantity

Don’t feel like you have to meet every single person in a room. Let conversation flow naturally with the people you meet, and if a conversation lasts longer than expected, you have a higher chance of being remembered. On the flip side, if a conversation fizzles and small talk fades, don’t be afraid to excuse yourself to get a drink, go to the restroom, and move onto another person!
