How to Handle Pushback

Let’s face it – pushback is a natural part of life. But it can be easy for people, particularly newer entrepreneurs, to succumb to particularly nasty feedback – especially when our product, idea, or venture has our own story (and money!) wrapped up in it. I’ve had my fair share of negative experiences or comments from people who would love to see me fail. So, I get that putting yourself and your idea out there feels dangerous, or vulnerable. But you know what the opposite of that feeling is?

Safe.

I’ll be real with you – 99% of the time, success and safety don’t mix. You have to take the risk to make that jump to success. But how do you take on those negative comments?

Here are a few tips to follow:

Prepare for It

Like I mentioned, pushback is a part of life. Most innovators introduced a new idea only to be met with resistance, doubt, or outright hate. You know what they say – history is bound to repeat itself, so chances are you will be too. Acknowledge that you’ve already taken a huge step by deciding to set off on this path. However, you also have to recognize that outside commentary automatically comes with the territory. All the greats have faced it, and no one is immune, period.

The sooner you realize that and prepare for it, the farther ahead you’ll be.

Consider the Source

When you get feedback you’re not looking for, consider where it’s coming from. If it’s a nameless, faceless person on the Internet, I can guarantee you they aren’t making the same moves you are. Those kinds of unfounded, hateful comments come from extremely insecure or bitter people, and there’s no good to be gained from listening to them. However, if you get an unexpected warning from the mentor you’ve been learning from for years, maybe it’s worth entertaining.

Remember Your Why

Though the best course of action is to ignore hateful comments, it isn’t always easy. There will be moments when they get to you, or you feel low, but it’s in these moments that you need to remember why you started doing this in the first place. Maybe it’s financial freedom, or to provide for your family. Maybe you came from an unstable home and want to break that cycle, or maybe your product will change the way people live. Whatever your reason is, hold onto it – it’ll be what keeps you moving forward when you feel like giving up.
